As a kitchen installer we are frequently asked “where do I start?” and “what will the process entail?”

To help, we have broken the process down into steps that will give you a good idea before you start and hopefully guide you along the way…

Research the type of kitchen you want.

There’s so much choice these days in terms of style and colours… Research the type of kitchen that you’d love, whilst also considering what will be most appropriate for your property or lifestyle.

Questions to think about… Do you want a contemporary/modern design or something more traditional? What colour kitchen and what finish; gloss or matt? Would you like handles or a handleless design?

Also, consider your property type and what it lends itself best to. For example, if you own a Victorian terrace house with a lots of original features, you may want to continue this theme and opt for a traditional shaker style kitchen.

Finally, what about your lifestyle? Your kitchen truly is the heart of your home and therefore needs to be the best fit for all those living in the space every day. If you have a busy house with small children and a pet you might not want a sleek, modern kitchen, that takes a little more time to keep clean. Glossy doors are beautiful but show up all those little fingerprints! Timber, on the other hand, doesn’t show marks as obviously and is easier to touch up if any slight damage does occur.

Will you use the kitchen for entertaining? If yes, try to incorporate some seating…  Maybe a breakfast bar or an island with bar stools? Having this area will make the space much more sociable and/or family friendly.

(If you are feeling lost already, don’t worry, this is where we come in!…)

Site meeting with Murraystruct rep and Howden's designer

We will arrange a site visit to chat through your options and look at the preferred designs, whilst considering the practicalities and installation. We can also offer advise on layout and any potential works that will be required, to achieve your dream kitchen space. An important factor to consider at this stage is your budget…

Look at what you want to achieve, add up other costs that may be involved (building work, electrics, plumbing, tiling e.t.c.), then allocate yourself a total budget. Break it down into four factors: kitchen, worktops, appliances and any building works. It’s always good to allow a little budget for contingency, we advise around 10%.

We sit down to discuss your ideal kitchen.

We will then arrange for a kitchen designer from Howdens to attend to also offer their expertise on design and what is most practical, as well as most aesthetically pleasing. The goal here is to strike the perfect balance of the two: design and functionality.

Howdens designers have a huge amount of knowledge and experience and use the latest software to enable them to produce technical plans to help with the installations and avoid any issues further down the line.

It's time to discuss costs and make a deposit.

It usually takes a few days to get your kitchen visuals drawn up and priced and we will then send you a computer generated visual and quotation for you to consider.

Once you have finalised your chosen kitchen, we need to agree a timescale for your project. If there is any building work involved we will coordinate and provide an estimate on how long we anticipate each stage to take. We will also liaise with Howdens regarding delivery of the kitchen and ensure the room is ready. By us taking control of the whole project, this will alleviate any problems before they arise.

Once we have agreed on a start date, we will order everything from the relevant suppliers. We will ask for a deposit at this stage and book a date into the diary to commence the work.

Once the building works are complete it's time to start fitting your kitchen.

Once the initial building works are out of the way, it’s time to start fitting your kitchen.  Depending on the size and complexity, it should take between 3-5 days to install the cabinets. If you are having laminate or wood worktops, these will be installed straight away. If you have opted for a solid worktop; granite, quartz or similar, this needs a specialist installation and will take a little longer (a template will need to be taken once the cabinets have been installed). The worktops are then manufactured and installed.

Once the worktops are installed, the sink and tap will be plumbed in, as well as the hob (if situated within the worktop) being connected. Other appliances should have already been set up. We will co-ordinate any and all specialist trades e.g. electricians or gas engineers.

If you are having a splashback or tiling, this will happen after the worktop has been installed, so as to template or tile around the finished space.

We will of course then ensure the space gets a good clean and inspection before signing off any work.
